Members of Australia’s Uyghur communities are to hold Nationwide demonstrations to condemn China’s policies underpinning it’s ongoing Genocide of the Uyghur People of East Turkistan.
5th July 2018 marks the 9th anniversary of the July 2009 Urumqi Massacre where hundreds of Uyghur protestors were killed and a further harsh crackdown resulted in mass disappearances of tens of thousands of other Uyghurs.
Today the situation is even more unimaginable as over ONE MILLION Uyghurs are detained in Concentration Camps indefinitely. We appeal to the Australian Government and the United States Congress to enact legislation to help free the millions of Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples of East Turkistan from China’s Nazi-style concentration camps and extrajudicial prisons to STOP a mass GENOCIDE in the 21st century.

The demonstration in front of the Chinese Embassy and of the Chinese Consulate on 5th July commemorates the 9th anniversary of the Urumqi Massacre in 2009, while the demonstration in front of the US Embassy aims to show solidarity with the Uyghurs currently holding a protest in Washington DC in the US to appeal to the US Congress to draft a resolution on the Uyghur issue.
The Urumqi Massacre was one of the darkest chapters in the history of the Uyghurs. The actions of the Chinese Government on this day clearly indicated its refusal to listen to the legitimate grievances of the Uyghurs against worsening mistreatment, institutionalised discrimination and intensified assimilation. The Chinese government has concealed the exact number of Uyghurs who disappeared, were killed and were sentenced to long prison terms – the truth remains unknown to the world!
The situation in the Uyghur homeland has become far worse since then. The existence of the whole Uyghur nation in East Turkistan (aka Xinjiang (East Turkistan) Uyghur Autonomous Region) is now on the verge of extinction. Under the leadership of Xi Jinping, Chinese authorities have determined to wipe out the Uyghurs through unwarranted detention in what is euphemistically called ‘re-education centres’ which are in fact concentration camps.
There have been reports of Uyghurs being killed within these institutions shrouded in secrecy. These camps are facilitating the infliction of unspeakable suffering upon the Uyghurs, stripping them of their liberty and attempting to rob them of their identity and dignity through denunciation of their native culture, language, religion and values.
The Uyghurs outside of the concentration camps currently live in an Orwellian state where Chinese authorities subject Uyghurs to arbitrary arrest, egregious restrictions on religious practice and culture, and a digitized surveillance system so pervasive that every aspect of daily life is monitored – through facial recognition cameras, mobile phone scans, DNA collection and an extensive and intrusive police presence.
Strictly speaking, the Uyghurs are going through a systematic genocide with up to ONE MILLION Uyghurs in concentration camps. Which means that at least one and perhaps far more of every ten Uyghur men live in a concentration camp right now. There remains no Uyghur family here in Australia nor in our Uyghur homeland who don’t know of a relative or friend who have been incarcerated in these death camps.
Still worse, this Uyghur genocide is unfolding before the very eyes of the world, unaddressed by the UN, EU, USA or Australia. The acquiescence of world leaders on this issue and their corrosive silence is in essence condoning the atrocities of the Chinese authorities against the Uyghur people and it is therefore as horrific as a crime against humanity.
Through the demonstrations and other following activism in the future, the Uyghurs in Australia call for the Australian government to break its silence over one of the most heinous crimes being committed by the Chinese government against Uyghurs. Remaining silent and turning a blind eye to this ongoing genocide is tacitly encouraging China to perpetuate its continued genocide against the Uyghur people.
In feeling hopeless and helpless, the Uyghurs are in need of your support to stop this affront to humanity. Any support counts and any voice is welcome.
